The Arranger

Randal was first exposed to Chinese Orchestral music at the age of 13 when he entered Northland Secondary School's Chinese Orchestra. Under the baton of the renowned maestro Liu Bin for the past 4 years, he has learned many instruments. In each of the many competitions the orchestra has participated in, he has played a different instrument, ranging from woodwind to percussion. He learned the DiZi for several years before taking up Percussion at the age of 15. He was actively involved as an Orchestral Librarian then.

At age 17 Randal was accepted into Republic Polytechnic’s Diploma in Sonic Arts programme. Soon after, he joined the school's Chinese Orchestra. Under the baton of Foo Long Wee, he has picked up interest in plucked strings instruments and grasped several basics within a year. Encouraged, he took up ZhongRuan lessons under the tutelage of Singapore Chinese Orchestra's ZhongRuan player, Madam Foong Chui San. He attained a Certificate of Distinction in Grade 6 (ZhongRuan) examination by Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and Central Conservatory of Music in 2008, Randal has now set his sights on, and is striving to be, a professional performer in the local arts scene.

Having learnt many pieces, his repertoire comprises of a large variety of pieces such as Liu Xing's 'Wu Suo Shi Shi', Ning Yong's 'Si Lu Tuo Ling', the renowned ZhongRuan Concerto 'YunNan HuiYi'. Randal is also able to play famous LiuQin solos such as 'The Garden After Rain', 'Ta Qi Ke Wu Qu' and more.

He's also actively involved in Community Club orchestras such as Frontier CC, and Teck Ghee CC. He has been a guest performer in many other orchestras such as BoonLay CC. Randal is also a XiaoRuan player in Ding Xiao Yan's Ruan Ensemble, at Tampines East CC.

Having earned the Grade 6 (Merit) ABRSM Music Theory, Randal is a keen music theorist who aims to learn and improve his arrangement abilities and produce quality works that will be accepted and appreciated by the local public. Having a large range of arrangements ranging from all kinds of genres such as Classical, Pop to even Rock music, Randal attempts to break away from the stereotyped mindset that Chinese Orchestras are boring and overly-traditional. He writes works for all kinds of Chinese Orchestral instrumentation, ranging from large scale orchestras to ensembles.

Randal has gained interest in arranging pieces since his inauguration as Republic Polytechnic's Chinese Orchestra's President. His pioneer work 'Libertango' (Cello Solo with Orchestra) will be performed in Reflections 2010 by RPCO. His other works are practiced at Frontier CC Chinese Orchestra and will be performed on 24th December at Frontier CC itself. Pieces include White Night, Concerto for Lute in D maj. and more.
